Week of May 20, 2013

Reading – This week in our reading lessons we will discuss how we can look at things in a different way.  We will be practicing  words with the ou vowel pattern.  Our story this week is called “Mole and Baby Bird”.

Sight Words for the Week –   door  loved  should  wood

Spelling Words for the Week –   mouth  house  found  our  out  cloud  ouch  shout  round  count  should  loved

There will not be anymore spelling tests this year due to the short weeks.

Math – We will begin a new unit which focuses on two-dimensional geometry.

Writing – We will be focusing on nonfiction writing pieces.

Just a reminder that Tuesday is field day!  The weather is predicted to be very hot.  Please make sure that your child has a water bottle (already filled) and wears sunscreen.

Week of May 13, 2013

Happy Mother’s Day!

Reading – This week in our reading lessons we will discuss what we can do when problems need clever solutions.   We will be practicing the diphthongs ow and ou and the final syllable le.  Our story this week is called “Tippy Toe Chick”.   Our grade level has decided that there will be no more weekly reading tests.  We have so many activities that we would like to complete before the end of the year so we feel assessing students through our fluency and comprehension activities in class will be a better use of time.   We will continue to have weekly spelling tests.

Week of May 6, 2013

Reading – This week in our reading lessons we will be focusing on treasures that we can share with our neighbors.  We will be practicing the suffixes ly and ful.  Our story this week is called “Henry and Mudge”.   We will be having a spelling test, but there will not be a reading test this week.  We will cover the material, but we will not test the students because it is such a busy week with our zoo trip, special presentations, and projects that we have planned for this week.

Week of April 29th, 2013

Reading – This week in our reading lessons we will be discussing treasures we can share at home.  We will be practicing compound words and the digraphs ue, ew, and ui.  We will be reviewing adjectives and practice recognizing the theme in our stories.  Our story this week is called“Peter’s Chair”.

Sight Words for the Week –   stood, room, thought, picture, remember

Spelling Words for the Week –   backpack  outside  baseball  herself  flashlight  bluebird  lunchbox  suitcase  inside  brainstorm  picture remember

Math – This week we will continue working with graphs.

Writing – As we get ready for our trip to the zoo, we will be learning some animal facts and focus on nonfiction writing.

Week of April 22, 2013

Reading –   This week in our reading program we will be continuing our unit which focuses on the theme treasures.  We will be discussing why we treasure special places.  We will be working on words with the ie and igh letter patterns and the blends kn and wr.

Sight Words for the Week –   above  eight   laugh   moon  touch

Spelling Words for the Week –  lie  tie  high  might  right  night  bright  light  pie  tight  above  laugh

Math – This week we will start a new unit which focuses on graphing.

Writing – We will be writing about things we can do to take care of our world in celebration of Earth Day!

Week of April 15th , 2013

Reading – This week in our reading lessons we will be focusing on what treasures we can find in our country.  We will be practicing the digraphs oa and ow.   We also be reviewing adjectives and we will practice recognizing facts and details within our stories.  Our story this week is called, “A Trip to Washington, D. C.”.

Sight Words for the Week –   found  mouth  once  took  wild

Spelling Words for the Week –   boat  road  snow  row  yellow  loaf  coat  soap  blow  pillow  once  wild

Math – This week we will continue to practice measuring.

Writing – We will be reviewing how to write an opinion piece.

This week is spirit week as we cheer on our 3rd, 4th , and 5th grade students who are getting ready to take the OAA.

•Monday, April 15th:   Have sweet dreams about the OAA:  Wear your pajamas to school.

•Tuesday, April 16th:    OAA All Stars:  Wear your favorite college or sports team’s shirts, jerseys, hats.

•Wednesday, April 17th:  We are wild about the OAA:  Wear your wildest and wackiest outfit!

•Thursday, April 18th:   Get dressed for success for the OAA test:  Wear your nicest, fanciest outfit.

•Friday, April 19th:      Rock out the OAA:  Dress like a rock star today… looking for wild and wacky hair and rock star attire.

Our class will be attending the book fair on Thursday the 18th.  Please send in money if you would like your child to purchase books.  You can also purchase them online.

Week of April 8, 2013

I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful weather!

Reading –   This week in our reading program we will be continuing our unit which focuses on the theme treasures.  We will be discussing how stories can be treasures.  We will be working on words with the ea letter pattern and practice adding endings to words.  We will also be reviewing adjectives.

Sight Words for the Week –   draw  colors  over  drew  great  sign  show

Spelling Words for the Week –  eat  sea  each  team  please  dream  treat  beach  clean  lean  colors  sign

Math – This week our math lessons will focus on measurement.

Writing – We will be writing personal narratives about spring.
